Education System in Austira

Higher Education System:

The university system in Austria falls under the Bologna Process within the European Higher Education Area. With over 39 public, private, and teacher training schools, studying in Austria provides students with a very unique experience in a foreign higher education system. International students in Austria have the opportunity to study within specialized universities. Although classical universities do exist there is also the option to enter into universities such as Universities of College & Teacher Education, Universities of Applied Sciences, or Universities of the Arts. Each school allows for residents and international students in Austria to study under a curriculum that focuses on professional-orientated education by providing the following:
  • 3 year program to obtain Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-2 year programs to obtain a Master’s degree
  • Mandatory units for career-training
  • Mandatory work based internships
  • A Bachelor degree in conjunction with a teaching qualification
Although there are programs that offer courses in English, some may require proof of German proficiency. If you have an interest in the German language then studying in Austria is something to consider. 

Living & Studying in Austria:

The academic year in Austria is split into two semesters: winter and summer. The academic year begins around October 1st and ends around September 30th of the following year. 

For Universities and Universities of Arts there is a €363.36 (2010) fee per semester. This fee is waived for those who are EU/EEA & Swiss nationals. For Universities of Applies Sciences the fee is also placed at €363.36 per semester and is required to be paid by all students. Private universities have higher tuition rates which can differ from one to another.

The Austrian Exchange Service (OeAD) is the main resource for students who are looking for housing. They provide assistance in finding student housing in flats and residence halls. The International office at each university is another resource for those interested in finding private accommodations. It is recommended that for monthly living costs students be prepared to pay between €710 to €800 a month for accommodation, food, studies, and personal expenses.

Student Visa Requirements for Austria


v  Dully filled Application Form for theStudent Resident Permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung "Studierender")
   
v  Passport copy.
   
v  Passport size photographs - Two numbers.
   
v  Cover letter explaining the purpose of the trip including detailed description of your proposed course of study
   
v   Birth Certificate with the Apostille (This means, the certificate is authenticated by the Government). Translated version in German also to be attached.
   
v  Police Clearance Certificate. Translated Version in German also to be attached.
   
v  Proof of Accommodation in Austria.
   
v  Proof of financial means to finance one’s stay: for students up to 24 years at least EUR 426.57 per month, for older students at least EUR 772.40 per month [status of 11/2008]; e.g. a savings account or a bank account at an Austrian bank or a declaration of guarantee (Haftungserklärung) of a person living in Austria or proof of purchase of traveller’s cheques for the necessary amount or a confirmation of the award of a scholarship/grant; if the costs for accommodation exceed EUR 239.15/month, you have to prove additional funds
  
v  Admission letter from the University.
   
v  Over Seas Medical Insurance (Minimum Coverage €30000).
   
v  Visa Application Fees €75.

      Attention: You have to submit all documents in languages other than German (exception: documents in English) together with an authorised German translation. Foreign documents have to be legalised (Legalisation). Please send the completed application form and all additional documents by post to the Admission Office of the university at which you would like to study.
